Environment: Ubuntu 5.10 (Breezy Badger) with recent patches, Kernel:
2.6.12-10-k7 #1
Hardware: AMD Athlon K7 system, with a brand new Lite-On CD/DVD RW drive

Symptom: kernel log (/var/log/kern.log) fills up with errors at a very high rate
when Ubuntu DVD is being read.

The error seems to be recoverable since the drive works, however the spew rate
is extreme and fills my disk
fast.

Speculation: could it be we need 'multimode' configured in the kernel?
Advice on how to set multimode without rebuilding the kernel, appreciated.

Here's the detection sequence during boot:

And here are the errors that the driver spews about 1-2 times per second while
being used:
