I am using Ubuntu 5.10. While trying to have my SCSI scanner recognized
I have noticed the following:

While BIOS comes up, SCSI configuration is accessible.
There is a message about the SCSI scanner 'UMAX Astra 610s',
which is indeed connected to the card.

Upon boot, /var/log/messages shows:

Dec 14 21:06:23 durini kernel: [4294672.502000] ide: Assuming 33MHz system bus
speed for PIO modes; override with idebus=xx
Dec 14 21:06:23 durini kernel: [4294672.502000] ACPI: bus type ide registered
Dec 14 21:06:23 durini kernel: [4294672.536000] SCSI subsystem initialized

0: request_region() failed, port 0xde00, len 0x10

after system comes up:

lspci -v gives:

0000:00:0a.0 SCSI storage controller: Advanced System Products, Inc ABP940-U /
ABP960-U (rev 03)
Subsystem: Advanced System Products, Inc ASC1300 SCSI Adapter
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 64, IRQ 10
	I/O ports at de00 [size=256]
	Memory at efffff00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
Expansion ROM at effe0000 [disabled] [size=64K]

after trying to
  insmod advansys
There is a failure message saying something about ~ device not found.
Later upon calling 'lspci' again, it (lspci) crashes with segmentation fault:
and /var/log/messages has:
