I was away in Vegas for the week and when I got back I reloaded with a dapper
daily from 09-Dec-2005.  Now /dev/scd0 is created and cds are being mounted. 
Consider this bug closed as my environment is no longer the same.

I did notice the following repeating output in dmesg with no cd in drive:
