Thanks for this!
After a bit of searching on the Internet with new search terms, I ended up
finding out that a simple "ifconfig eth0 up" will load the firmware into the card.
I'm ashamed of not having tried this before...
However, the driver still indeed needs updating, so that it works as it should,
so I'm leaving this bug open.
