I can confirm that EXTRAVERSION isn't set in the Makefile, but this has always
been the case, and doesn't seem to cause problems for me when building external
modules:
mizar:[/tmp] grep EXTRAVERSION /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build/Makefile
EXTRAVERSION =
[...]
mizar:[/tmp/unionfs-1.0.13] make CC=gcc-3.4 -n install
[...]
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.12-7-k7/build SUBDIRS=/tmp/unionfs-1.0.13
FISTDEVMK=/tmp/unionfs-1.0.13/fistdev.mk modules
mkdir -p //lib/modules/2.6.12-7-k7/kernel/fs
if [ -f unionfs.ko ] ; then cp unionfs.ko //lib/modules/2.6.12-7-k7/kernel/fs ;
else cp unionfs.o //lib/modules/2.6.12-7-k7/kernel/fs ; fi
/sbin/depmod -a
