More info: I uninstalled alsa-driver 1.0.10rc1 and reinstalled the kernel image
(the latest 2.6.12-k8 one). I also enabled the onboard sound in BIOS (A8N-SLI,
nForce4 chipset) and plugged my headphones. Oddly enough, no matter what sound
card I chose as the default one in Preferences->Sound, OSS produced beeping on
that integrated soundcard. Other than that, the only thing I heard was some
annoying high-freq pattern.
Oh, btw. In Preferences->Sound I see two soundcards listed: Audigy (SB0090) and
MPU-401 UART. I have no idea what that MPU-401 UART could be.
