Note: this weekend, the screen also went whacky when waking up from display
sleep (ie: the monitor was in DPMS sleep, but the rest of the laptop was "awake").

I also discovered that you can fix this, should it occur, by turning the
backlight all the way down until the screen turns off and then turning it back up.
