I have about the same issue but less critical (no kernel panic/freeze) with the
media bay of my Dell Latitude X300. The most annoying is the DVD-ROM never being
recognized if I append the bay after having booting without it. It seems to be a
USB device (there is an internal USB bus), it is worth filing a similar bug
report, or you will have no clue?
