Summary: Commenting out the "-B 1" line stopped the hang on my Thinkpad R51.

Long answer: I've been running with laptop mode disabled for several months, so
first I enabled laptop mode, rebooted, ran on battery power, and waited to see
if he hang still occurred. It did, after about fifteen minutes.

Then I commented out the "-B 1" line, rebooted, and started using the computer
on battery power. I've been using it for several hours without any problem.

For me at least, removing the "-B 1" line fixes the problem. The strange thing
about this solution is, what does it have to do with (mad)wifi? My earlier
experiments showed that I could use laptop-mode just fine as long as I didn't
use the wifi interface.
