Tried that. Booted the kernel with the following arguments (confirmed via
/proc/cmdline):

root=/dev/mapper/linuxvg-breezystd ro

By removing the 'quiet' parameter, i can see a whole bunch of kernel messages,
but unfortunately it moves far far far too fast to see what's last before
the screen goes black. It stays black till X loads (and switching back to the
console
gives a black screen). I can start poking at the differences between the kernels
to see
what's the issue, is that a reasaonble approach from here?
