Please try the following procedure:
(1) System> Preferences> Sounds> uncheck Enable sound server startup
(2) System> Preferences> Multimedia Systems Selector> Default Sink> Custom>
alsasink device=plughw:0,0
(3) Then try using a gstreamer-based multimedia application, like Totem or Rhythmbox

Alternately, you can follow steps (1) and (2), then open a Terminal and execute
,,aplay -Dplughw:0,0 /usr/share/sounds/$foo.wav'' (remember to substitute a
legit wav file for $foo.wav).
