Hi Ben,

Here is what I just did :

- Go to 'Network Settings' (System->Administration->Networking) to disable NIC
- sudo modprobe -r 8139cp
- sudo modprobe -r 8139too
- sudo modprobe -r 8139mii
- 'ifconfig' to make sure eth0 was not listed anymore
- Again in Network Settings, saw that NIC's wasn't listed anymore

Now that everything was removed I did :

- sudo modprobe 8139cp
was loaded instantly, but NIC not enabled/working, as expected.

- sudo modprobe 8139too
It loaded instantly, and the NIC and internet were instantly back up again, not
even half a second delay, sweet as chocolate.

So if I understand you well, this would mean that the delay is not due to the
8139cp driver, but probably hotplug.
On to the hotplug team then ! ;-)
