Summary: Framebuffer broken during install with Ati Radeon X300
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: i386
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: linux
        AssignedTo: ben.collins at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: diamond+ubuntubugzilla at nonado.net
         QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

When booting off an ubuntu cd (hoary live and install, and colony
3 all tested), I can see the kernel booting, hotplug starting, and
one of the last lines i can make out is syslogd and klogd being
started. Then the screen goes completely black. The machine is not
hung, i've even gotten as far as the desktop on the hoary live disk
by pressing return a lot ,-) (and X works just fine when it gets
there, but switching to the consoles just gives a blank screen again).

Supplying the 'debian-installer/frame-buffer=false' param at the boot
prompt of the cd solves the issue, and everything works fine. Everything
is also fine once the os is installed.

The h/w is a Dell Inspiron 9300, with an ati radeon X300 pci-express
graphics card.

diamond at muffin:~$ lspci | grep 01:00
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc: Unknown device 5460
diamond at muffin:~$ lspci -n | grep 01:00
0000:01:00.0 0300: 1002:5460

This may be a duplicate of 12849, the symptoms look the same, they're
both ati, but i've no idea how similar the chipsets are.
