Summary: No irda on laptop (VIA chipset)
Product: Ubuntu
Version: unspecified
Platform: i386
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: kernel-package
AssignedTo: fabbione at ubuntu.com

QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com
Hi all,
I own a Mitac 7321 and am completely unable to get any kind of infra-red working
under Ubuntu, whereas it is possible (with a little effort) to get it working
under Knoppix 3.7. Specifically, whenever I can get irda0 to appear in the list
of interfaces, the HWaddr always appears as 00:00:00:00, and irdadump can not be
coaxed into outputting anything in the presence of my PalmPilot (when the
PalmPilot is searching for recipients for a file transfer) in Ubuntu, whereas in
Knoppix it can. The correct module (via_ircc) is being loaded, and I have added
the line "alias irda0 via_ircc" to my /etc/modprobe.d/aliases. I'm not sure
what other information would be of use to the developers, so please feel free to
ask away! I'd recount the list of things I've tried, but I have spent -
literally - hours trying to get this to work, so it would fill up pages!
I'm submitting this as a bug as I know that the sequence of commands needed to
get it working under Knoppix is definitely not yielding the desired effect under
Ubuntu, which leads me to suspect that this may be a bug with the driver itself.
In any case, my situation conflicts with what I thought was one of the Ubuntu
goals (although I can no longer find a reference to it!) - that infra-red
should "Just Work".
Cheers,
Simon
