'noinotify' doesn't work for me either.  However, I think I isolated something
that DOES work:

Recompile 2.6.11 with the CONFIG_PREEMPT and CONFIG_PREEMPT_BKL turned OFF, and
the crash goes away.  However, the X.org 'nv' driver still hung up from time to
time.   I then compiled and used NVidia's 'nvidia' X.org driver, and everything
works great, for me!
