I have the same issue, however, only my DVD reader is missing, my DVD writer is
detected as it should:

$ dmesg | grep hd[c-d]

$ ls -l /dev/hd[a-z]
brw-rw----  1 root disk   3,  0 2005-08-05 10:53 /dev/hda
brw-rw----  1 root disk   3, 64 2005-08-05 10:53 /dev/hdb
