No I never needed to as the problem would occur so soon after boot that it
wouldn't have time to get "hot".

"When you say that the window manager doesn't need to be started, do you mean
that it happens even if you don't login? 

Yes. Sometimes though I get as far as typing in my password though.

"Does it happen when you boot in recovery mode?"

Yes, even from the command line.
