Summary: Hyper Threading fails on Dimension 8300
           Product: Ubuntu
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: Other
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: minor
          Priority: P2
         Component: linux
        AssignedTo: fabbione at ubuntu.com
        ReportedBy: koesterreich at gmx.net
         QAContact: kernel-bugs at lists.ubuntu.com

I have following problem:

When I use the 686-smp-kernel for using the Hyper-Threading function of my pentium 4 chip, it sometimes fails
to boot and reboots. Switching off the computer and starting again works most times and it boots without
problems. But it is not very reliable, though.

The problem is not new to me but I wanted to get it working now. Windows XP does not have this problem. All
SuSE Versions up to 9.1 did not work correct (I did not test the new ones), same with Debian Sarge and Gentoo
Linux and now Ubuntu. Moreover all BIOS-Version starting from A00 to the newest A07 did not solve the problem
either.

It ist hard for me to do some debugging because it has to be an very early and elementary function so that it
restarts before it prints error-messages.

The normal 386 and 686 kernels (without smp-support) work well, also when deactivating HT in the bios-menu.

Summary:

System: Dell Dimension 8300
Kernel: 2.6.10-686-smp
Bios: A00-A07

It is probably impossible to reproduce this bug without having a Dimension 8300. But maybe other Computers
using same parts have the problem also. The mainboard is a Intel 875p, I think.
My guess is, that is has to do something with ACPI. I remember a message like "ACPI: Bad EIP value", but I do
not know, what it means or if it is related to the problem.

[Sorry for my broken English]
