I also tested the i386 version of the hoary final release installer
(ubuntu-5.04-install-i386.iso) and the symptoms are the same. A cursory
examination of the dmesg shows that the same "ide#: I/O resource 0x###-0x### not
free" and "ide#: ports already in use, skipping probe" messages occur, except
that there is no segfault in-between the two repetitions of those messages ...
but still neither the IDE CD nor the SATA hard disks are detected. The segfault
is perhaps unique to the amd64 version of the ide-generic module (or one of its
dependencies) under certain circumstances (any BIOS setting other than
IDE-COMBINED). However, even when there is no segfault there is still a problem
with detection.
