When I boot 2.6.10-5-386 in normal mode, the first messages on the screen are

Starting Ubuntu
ide2: I/O resource 0x3EE-0x3EE not free
ide2: ports already in use, skipping probe

then there are some normal looking messages, and when it gets to 

Loading modules...

the system hangs.  Here I tried Alt-SysRq-t  and the system printed

SysRq : Show State
^[t

there was no further response. When I pressed Alt-SysRq-t again, I got exactly
the same "Show State" message.
