kern.log when booting 2.6.10-5-386 RECOVERY mode

Boot messages started out looking mostly normal, except they included the two
lines similar to before (I may have missed something -- this is handwritten):
 ide2: I/O resource 0x3EE-0x3EE not free
 ide2: ports already in use
and a few other normal startup messages, including kjournald starting

then everything stops and I see two messages

ide-cd: cmd 0x5a timed out
hdc: lost interrupt

---> I pressed Alt-SysRq-t  here

[screenfull of messages starting with hex codes and things like "ide-cd"]

hdc: ATAPI 40X CD-ROM drive
hdc: lost interrupt

-----> after a couple of minutes I hold the power button to shut down.
