Thank you for the responses.

1) No, neither the recovery mode nor the regular boot mode of 2.6.10 boot
successfully after commenting out the es1371 module. HOWEVER, I see now that
recovery mode hangs in a different way. I will describe it in a separate comment.

2) are we looking at a different DebuggingSystemCrash? The URL I was directed to
earlier only has one key sequence to try, and it was not alt+sysrq+t. Yes, that
did something -- it filled the screen with hexadecimal codes and what look like
code entry points -- and it apparently created a file at /var/log/kernel.log. It
seems to have lots of control and escape codes in it. Would it be best to add it
to this bug as an ATTACHMENT?

Alt-SysRq-t should be added to the DebuggingSystemCrash wiki page with a
description of what it does, and maybe include other key sequences (if any) that
might be useful in this situation.

I will capture the information on that machine and post it here.
