Failing to bootstrap at all on raring

for the record, we have isolated two issues.
the "use of closed network connection" issue is because we are
using go1.0.2 with a cowboy patch. updating to use 1.0.3 would
solve the issue.
the fact that raring doesn't bootstrap correctly is because of this issue:
