I'm well aware and I do know how to do this. HOWEVER, when the boot
blackscreens, the only way to actually edit /etc/default/grub is a
process that requires booting with a usb and mounting the drive via the
command line. This isn't an optimal way of doing this, and it is beyond
any but advanced users. The 'nomodeset' parameter allows a boot to a
desktop, but the inability to bring up the grub menu to actually add it,
in a simple way, is a major problem, and as I said, is exclusive to mac
users. Only ubuntu can 'fix' this. And, as I've already written,
distributions that do not hide grub, when linux is the only installed
OS, do not have this problem. This is a problem with how the Ubuntu
developers have decided to implement the grub menu. The fix is to not
hide grub, for single installs, if the detected hardware is Apple. Only
the Ubuntu developers can fix this.

Title:
On Apple laptops, no key will make a hidden GRUB screen visible
Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
When Grub is installed on an Apple laptop, and the install is in single-boot mode, with the screen hidden by default, no key on the Apple keyboard will make the hidden grub screen visible. If Ubuntu blackscreens at first boot after install, there is no way to bring up the grub menu and edit the boot parameters to "nomodeset" in order to get to a visible desktop.
This is an Apple-specific problem and is not present on a PC.
