Sounds like file system corruption. The debootstrap package would not
cause this.

  Doing software update I get

  Preparing to unpack .../debootstrap_1.0.59ubuntu0.3_all.deb ...
  Unpacking debootstrap (1.0.59ubuntu0.3) over (1.0.59ubuntu0.2) ...
  and it sits doing nothing.

  My file backup tool hangs trying to read devices.tar.gz.dpkg-new
  and I if I use cat devices.tar.gz.dpkg-new
  it hangs
