Many thanks, Paul, for your timely reply.
It ended with a complete re-format, a fresh iso. 24.10.1 amd64
(And this time I was brave enough to try one of the flavours better suited to what I'm doing)
And success!

I can't thank you people enough for what you do with this operating system.
