Public bug reported:
Hi,
I'm currently upgrading a cloud machine from 22.04 to 24.04 with do-
release-upgrade.
Since upgrading can interrupt the root ssh session the upgrade is
running on, I am not using an ssh connection, but a virtual console.
Unfortunately, this web-based virtual console does not support scrolling
up or down or enlarging the screen, just as physical consoles in the old
days of 80x25 text screens did.
The problem:
do-release-upgrade issues a lot of nice, but talkative and useless
bloated blah blah, filled with empty lines, when beeing started, to make
the admin feel good and taken care for.
But this causes more text to be printed than fits on a console screen,
and it can't be scrolled up when on a virtual old-style console.
And this is error prone, since not all printed text can be seen, and
possibly important hints could have been missed.
Therefore, do-release-upgrade should either
- make sure that the output text fits into a 80x25 screen view,
- or use a pager
to make sure the admin can read the important stuff.
regards
