The error in the logs is:
Use of uninitialized value in string eq at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Passthrough.pm line 227, <GEN0> line 19.
Use of uninitialized value $ret in string eq at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/FrontEnd/Passthrough.pm line 237, <GEN0> line 19.
Use of uninitialized value $_[1] in join or string at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/DbDriver/Stack.pm line 111, <GEN0> line 19.
Use of uninitialized value $val in substitution (s///) at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Format/822.pm line 83, <GEN2> line 14.
Use of uninitialized value $val in concatenation (.) or string at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Format/822.pm line 84, <GEN2> line 14.
dpkg: error processing package libpam0g:amd64 (--configure):
installed libpam0g:amd64 package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 128
This suggests a crash in the debconf frontend that the pam maintainer
script was talking to.
Without a reproducible case for this, it is probably not actionable.
