It didn't like my way to state a minimum package version:

Anyway, from that log you can see that it run autopkgtest with
python3-nose 1.3.7-9, but still the same failure:

error: error in setup.cfg: command 'build' has no such option 'i18n'

Back at square one. :( (Besides my faulty change to aptdaemon, then,
which reasonably should be reverted.)

Bug description:
  aptdaemon FTBFS with python3-setuptools 65.5.0-1.

  I've copied what I hope is the relevant part of the log below.

  Spoiler alert: there may also be issues with python3-nose and Python
  3.11 [1], but it is recommended that packages migrate away from using
  nose anyway [2].
