I have no idea what changed, but I tried an upgrade again today (with
the intent of digging in again to try to figure out what's wrong) and it
work perfectly fine.  This can be closed.

  interpreting the apt.log to figure out what to do.  The packages
  mentioned in there look Ok as far as I can tell...
