The precise error is:

Fundamentally this is an issue with your firmware that grub can't work
around.  The UEFI implementation is denying Ubuntu access to record its
boot entry in the nvram.  While it should still be possible to boot
Ubuntu from disk via the fallback path, your laptop might also have
other boot entries that it prefers over booting from the disk that cause
incorrect behavior.  Best case, boot will be slower because it's going
via the fallback path.  And whatever we happen to do in the installer to
manage this, if you do run Ubuntu with your firmware in this state, each
grub or shim package update will also fail with this error.

I recommend you check your firmware settings for any options that show
that the boot options are locked down, and if there are any, to disable
those settings.
