The issue may be related to an update of "linux-firmware" package.
Laptop is a Latitude E7450 (062E) with Dell BIOS A13 version in Secure Boot mode.

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 18.04.4 LTS
Release: 18.04

Update of grub-efi-amd64-signed package:
Paramétrage de grub-efi-amd64-signed (1.93.16+2.02-2ubuntu8.15) ...
Installation pour la plate-forme x86_64-efi.
Could not delete variable: Invalid argument
grub-install : erreur : efibootmgr n'a pas réussi à enregistrer l'entrée de démarrage: Bloc de périphérique requis.
(translation: efibootmgr failed to register the boot entry: Block device required.)

@tormec: when you say you have to enter "Recovery Mode", is it a
suggested option following a reboot?
