Title:
[usability bug] Inconvenient design "Preparing disk partitions"
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: ubiquity
Rationale
1) I recently re-installed OS from scratch (Used Xubuntu 9.10 X86_64 Live-cd). I decided to repartition the disk by using the "preparation of the partions" Ubiquity. Unfortunately at the time of "preparation of the partions" I met with no intuitive interface "preparation of the partions", I schiatayu yato in the form in which the program exists now, it can be used only by those who have experience using it or read on how to handle it. Program Gparted much intuitive for the user.
Prior to partition, I decided to see how disk space will be allocated for this program, I indicated to reduce the size 1 of the sections, and then I saw some kind of warning window, and chose him "Yes". To my surprise, instead of that to just get a clear picture of how will be allocated a place on my drive, I started the process of reducing the real partition, which of course I did not want at the moment.
2)The second thing I did not like in the "preparation of the partions"
is that the program in conjunction with the user uses megabytes, not
gigabytes, which is certainly inconvenient for an inexperienced user.
Yes, and sophisticated user need some strain in the translation of
megabytes in gigabytes (need to convert it with calculator or brain =)
).
Solution #1: alteration of ubiquity, is responsible for partitioning disks.

1)Therefore, I propose not to make changes on the section at once, and add a button to apply. And only after you press this button to write changes to disk. I am convinced that this approach will allow the user to clearly understand in advance how much easy and effective it marks the disk, and if necessary, adjust the allocation of disk space before the actual recording on the disc, which saves time and nerves to the user.
2)Therefore, I propose to add a "preparation of the partions" ability to switch the units of information that the user himself can choose whether to work with gigabytes or megabytes.
