Title:
grub-pc postinst fails to install grub to devices not listed in
  /dev/disk/by-id

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub2

I've attached a patch that fixes this by simply using the plain device
name if device_to_id() fails. I'm not sure if this is really the best
way to deal with this problem. I encountered this when my father tried
to upgrade from karmic to lucid running under VMware Fusion.

During the upgrade the warning dialog that no grub install device had
been chosen appeared, despite the fact that he had never been
presented the dialog to choose an install device. Answering "No" to
the prompt "Continue without installing grub?" goes directly back to
the same warning and prompt, the only way to continue is to choose
  "Yes".

I will file a separate bug report for VMware virtual drives not
  showing up in /dev/disk/by-id/.
