Title:
Why is apport opening so many pop-ups, notifying users of crashes?
Status in apport package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Since I think 12.10, I started getting at least 3-4 of these pop-ups
daily from various programs (nautilus, rhythmbox, spotify, apport
itself...) notifying me that something has crashed and asking me if I
want to report the bug. I find any such GUI-level interaction very
aggressive and should only happen in extreme cases, not on a daily
basis.
What is the reasoning behind this behavior and is it really necessary?
Couldn't we have a global system-level question once the first crash
appears or when the user first logs in, asking if the user wants to
help developers by reporting bugs in the background ("sending random
statistics" as other OS-es call this) and then just silently report
them in the future? (and I don't mean per-application-per-version
silencing as is currently available - this still leaves too much
manual work).
The current behavior lead me to a situation where I completely turned
off bug reporting (same as the gentleman who wrote this blog post did
[1] and probably many others as well) as there was no better option to
silence it.
