Title:
‘Detect keyboard layout’ option not working 100% correctly
Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: ubiquity
It’s no serious bug but still a bit annoying – the ‘detect keyboard
layout’ option in ubiquity present on the Live CD of Ubuntu 10.04 beta
2 doesn’t work 100% correctly: I’ve got a Swiss-French keyboard layout
(please see [1] for the difference between Swiss-German and Swiss-
French keyboard layouts). The suggested keyboard layout in ubiquity
(step 3 of 7) is ‘France - Autre’. Because this is not the right
layout, I’ve chosen ‘Détecter la disposition du clavier’ (detect
keyboard layout). There I’ve typed following keys:
u, w, z (on an US keyboard: u, w, y)
Then I was asked if the letter ‘ö’ is present on my keyboard. I
pressed ‘oui’ (yes) because it is. Now I had to type this letter which
I can reach with [⇧] + [é] ([shift] + [é], on US keyboard [⇧] + [:] I
think). Finally I was asked if the letter ‘é’ is present on my
keyboard. It is, so I pressed ‘oui’ again. The programme now showed me
that it has chosen the ‘Suisse’ (Swiss) keyboard layout. As I remarked
while testing the keyboard in the box below, the detected layout is
the Swiss-German layout and not the Swiss-French keyboard! So I had to
correct this mistake manually.
In addition it is a bit strange that ‘Suisse’ refers to the Swiss-
German layout while the Swiss-French layout is called ‘Suisse -
Français’ (Swiss-French). It would be more obvious if the option
‘Suisse’ (Swiss) would be called ‘Suisse - German’ (Swiss-German).
