Ah, you also have the universe repository of the Ubuntu archive disabled
and that is where ubuntu-mate-desktop comes from. You'll need to enable
universe and install ubuntu-mate-desktop and try the upgrade again.

launchpad repositories, purged everything I can think of anb the
upgrade just fails...
