Title:
  .bashrc color_prompt check only works for xterm-color, not xterm-
  256color

Status in base-files package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  The `share/dot.bashrc` file checks like this whether to enable
  `color_prompt`:

  case "$TERM" in
      xterm-color) color_prompt=yes;;
  esac

  Nowaways, most terminals support 256 colors (instead of 8 like xterm-
  color). Their $TERM will usually be something like `xterm-256color`.

  Accordingly, this check was modified in the `skel`-package
  `/etc/skel/.bashrc` like this:

  case "$TERM" in
      xterm-color|*-256color) color_prompt=yes;;
  esac

  I would suggest the same modification be done in the base-files .bashrc.
