Title:
do-release-upgrade dies cosmic to disco (x crash to empty pty)
Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu:
New
Bug description:
I performed a 'sudo do-release-upgrade --devel' from cosmic to disco
tonight under X from gnome-terminal. In the middle of the upgrade the
screen changed from X to a black screen with a unblinking text cursor
in the upper left corner. CTRL-ALT-F[1-9] did nothing and I heard the
CPU fan spin down (it had been on during the entire upgrade). After
10m I held down the power button and forcibly powered the machine
down. Powering on the machine it booted to a getty on a pty where I
logged in and sudo'd to root. I ran 'apt-get install -f', 'apt full-
upgrade', and lastly 'apt autoremove --purge', then I rebooted and
things came back to life. The system seems happy now.
