My machine was effectively incapacitated during upgrade because removal
of packages made my software unuseable. I thought I could fix this with
a clean install. My computer is now dead.

Bug description:
  Happens during installation of Xubuntu or Ubuntu 18.4.1.  Message is "Executing 'grub-install/dev/sda failed' This is a fatal error."
  changing to sda1, sdb and sdb1 also failed.
  This machine previously had XUbuntu running happily.
