I'm not using Ubuntu.  This problem occurred with Linux Mint 19,
Friendly-Recovery software update 0.2.38ubuntu1.  I used Timeshift to
restore Linux Mint to an earlier date, which resolved the problem.  I then
tried installing the Friendly-Recovery update again, and experienced the
same issue when trying to use fsck.

  After the latest friendly-recovery update, I can no longer run fsck
  from friendly-recovery.  The only way I can do it is by booting to my
  live installation CD, which takes a lot of time.  It works, but is
  very inconvenient.
