I don't think this had anything to do with the proxy server, in your
VarLogDistupgradeMainlog.txt we can see the following.

You had multiple desktop meta packages installed which can be confusing
for the release-upgrader and the upgrade failed to calculate because of
kubuntu-desktop.

Bug description:
  I'm unable to do a release upgrade. My system is stuck behind a proxy
  server that requires authentication. In general my opinion is that
  proxy-servers with authentication are poorly supported in Ubuntu.
