[Bug 1773062] [NEW] can't install Ubuntu Mate 16.04 on Acer Aspire notebook

Public bug reported:

grub can't be installed, installer failed to complete successfully

please ask for any additional debug info, I am a professional
programmer, we can work on this failure further.

installation was being done from usb stick created by unetbootin

in ubuntu installer i chose to turn off secure boot and entered a
password for this twice.

$ lsb_release -rd
Description:	Ubuntu 16.04.4 LTS

I took a Acer factory-formatted Windows 10 hdd, in gparted resized its
main data partition, and added swap, boot, ext4 /, and an extra ntfs
partition for data. No warning suggesting a bios mode install appeared,
unlike in bug report https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/grub-
installer/+bug/1573412 .
