Dmitri -

Thank you for your prompt response.  Proserver is a data backup server
from Code42 (code42.com).  In this case, the installation is relatively
old (2 years?) and I'm sure that more modern versions comply better with
standard coding practices.

I had begun to suspect this process as the problem, too.  I'll disable
it before attempting to upgrade again.

Thanks again for your help!

sincerely,

Title:
trying to update EOL 15.10 using old-releases.ubuntu.com

Status in mdadm package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  following instructions in help.ubuntu.com/community/EOLUpgrades,
modified /etc/apt/sources.list. sudo apt-get update ran without
errors. I followed with sudo apt-get dist-upgrade, as usual, and got
lots of error. Machine is single purpose, running CrashPlan Pro
backup software from code42.com (process proserver, which features
  heavily in error messages).

  chemadmin at toor3:~/Updates20180518$ lsb_release -rd
  Description:	Ubuntu 15.10
  Release:	15.10

dist-upgrade claims problem in mdadm but not clear why. I am running
a large ZFS array (about 12 TB) as the target for the CrashPlan Pro
backup service. Neither /root nor rest of system in on ZFS. Backups
of /etc, /opt (for proserver software) and /home were made to /tank,
the ZFS filesystem. ZFS array was running when apt-get dist-upgrade
  was invoked.

I had hoped that this would update 15.10 to latest packages, in prep
  for do-release-upgrade to 16.04.4.

Not clear to me that the updated kernel will boot, especially since
  got error:

insserv: exiting now without changing boot order.

Any help you can provie would be great. If necessary, I can unmount
the ZFS array, install 16.04 cleanly to system disk, rebuild. Hope I
  don't have to!

  sincerely,

  Eric Lobenstine
