You have been subscribed to a public bug:
Since Grub2, Grub is also able to boot from a GPT disk even on legacy
BIOS systems. GPT is more flexible in the naming or amount of partitions
and more robust.
The only 'disadvantage' I could come up with would be if someone decides
to install a secondary OS on a legacy BIOS system that does not handle
GPT disks after Ubuntu was installed first with a GPT disk. This is
somewhat a rare case. Even for Window-Dualboot setups, Windwos is
usually installed first because it nukes the boot code anyways. If
Ubuntu is installed as a second OS, it will not re-write the partition
table anyways.
Thus I suggest defaulting to GPT for new partition tables (with
protective MBR, as partman/parted should automatically do) even for
smaller disk. :)
** Affects: partman-auto (Ubuntu)
