Public bug reported:

We are having problems with Software Updater on two separate Dell 3147
netbooks. The Software Updater was hanging at the end of checking for
updates. We ran updates via Synaptic Package Manager on each computer.
The one I'm reporting from has just run a partial update and suggested I
report the problem which I am now doing. The other netbook got screwed
up royally and only boots into recovery mode(?), i.e. a full-screen
terminal.

I wish I could be more specific, but don't know what went wrong in
either case, only that we ran Synaptic Package Manager's Fix Broken
Packages and Mark All Upgrade on both systems.
