Your upgrade attempt was actually to Ubuntu 17.10 not Ubuntu 18.04.

If you want to upgrade to Ubuntu 18.04  you'll need to set "prompt=lts"
in the file /etc/update-manager/release-upgrades. It also looks like you
have a gnome3 PPA enabled. You may want to disable and remove it using
the tool ppa-purge from the package 'ppa-purge'.
