Your disk is currently partitioned to boot in bios mode, but you booted
the installer in EFI mode. You either need to boot the installer in bios
mode, or partition the disk using GPT and set up an EFI system partition
to install in EFI mode. This will be done for you if you choose the "use
entire disk" guided install option.

Title:
Installation to USB HD (/dev/sdb) crashed on GRUB install failure
Status in grub-installer package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
GRUB EFI failed trying to install the x64 signed package - this error
appeared to be handled correctly by the routine (error was shown in
warning dialogue and OK button returned control to installer). However
this was immediately followed by a fatal (unknown) error which
resulted in the bug check.
Background
Booted EFI to Live USB Ubuntu 18.04 on system with HDD and external unpartitioned HDD. Ran auto-install routine, but chose to partition external HDD manually. Error received after acknowledging GRUB installation error dialogue.
