This may have something to do with the following PPA which you have
installed packages from:

https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

Please use the tool 'ppa-purge' from the package 'ppa-purge' to remove
this PPA and restore the packages to the official Ubuntu version and try
the upgrade again.

  I had earlier problems with ubuntu mate which I tried to remove
  completely, but did not succeed fully.

  17.10 is working fine.
