Sat Feb 10 14:34:03 UTC 2018

This bug was fixed in the package grub2 - 2.02-2ubuntu7

---------------
grub2 (2.02-2ubuntu7) bionic; urgency=medium

  [ Julian Andres Klode ]
  * debian/patches/shorter_version_info.patch: Only show the upstream version
in menu and console, and hide the package one in a package_version
    variable. (LP: #1723434)

  [ Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre ]
  * debian/patches/skip_text_gfxpayload_where_not_supported.patch: Skip the
'text' payload if it's not supported but present in gfxpayload, such as
    on EFI systems. (LP: #1711452)

Title:
grub2 splash screen displays excessively long package version number

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
grub2 is currently at version 2.02~beta3-4ubuntu6 in artful, and
  2.02~beta2-36ubuntu3.14 in xenial.

While it's important to be able to know from within the bootloader the
exact version of grub that is running for bug reporting and
troubleshooting purposes, this is a very ugly string to display to the
  user in the default path.

We should patch upstream grub to display a user friendly string in the
banner, and hide the full package version in some variable that's
available from the GRUB console for debugging purposes.
